Francisco Javier Piñana Conesa artistically knowed us Curro Piñana come from a family's artists: his father, Antonio Piñana, is a guitarrist: two generations of cantes mineros singers together on stage, both of whom are leading – and very much active – ambassadors of the traditional flamenco style known as las minas. The family tradition hails back to the grandfather, Antonio Piñana senior, patriarch of the clan, who was a master of cantes mineros, originating from Cartagenera.
This flamenco style is based on free-rhythm songs, which place great demands on the performer due to their difficulty and need for different nuances. Curro Piñana is also a great scholar of flamenco. The awards he has received over his career include the Ciudad de Úbeda National Flamenco Award, the Lámpara Minera, and first prize for Fandangos Mineros, Cartageneras and Mineras at the Cante de Las Minas Festival. His recordings have twice been awarded best flamenco record of the year.
